From the gardening business to the awakening of biodiversity

Humanity creates every day. She adapts all her tools according to her pace of life and her changes. Man has revolutionized travel with the automobile. It is also at the origin of the evolution allowing to transport wealth from one continent to another. Man has also transformed the force of nature into energy, for example. Thus, there is no doubt that he knows how to adapt to his environment, and makes very good use of it… for his personal needs. What if he thought about the common good? For the environment cannot adapt to Man. Indeed, that is not his role. That’s why today’s industries are trying to revolutionize the way they operate. Biodiversity depends on it. The world was now looking towards a responsible and sustainable business. But what about really ?…

Biodiversity at the heart of France’s environmental and economic issues

The culture of the land, a look back at the origin of the industry

Respect for the environment is an international issue. Every individual is concerned. You can see it on its scale, less or large. The important thing is to act accordingly. And France understood that.

According to INSEE, “biodiversity encompasses the entire world living at three levels: genetic diversity, species diversity and ecosystem diversity” (1).

France is rich in its natural heritage. Oceans, animal species, nature reserves… are part of its territory. Having had the chance to take advantage of all these resources for a long time, it is time for her to take care of them.

Indeed, in France but also throughout the world, environmental degradation is increasingly being felt. For example, “between 1989 and 2015, in metropolitan areas, populations of common birds specializing in agricultural, forest or built environments decreased by 23%” reports INSEE (1).

A general awareness takes place. It obviously starts with our factories, our industries and our (over)consumption.

If we go back to the beginnings of production and human activity, the cultivation of the land, gardening: everything comes from there. The crops were a lifetime. They brought food, raw materials and currency exchange. The economy of freight transport, the restaurant sector and many others depend on gardening; of the earth.

Towards responsible production thinking

A real awareness on the part of the state and certain companies takes place. Veja is a perfect example of a real responsible and intelligent production reflection. Since 2005, the founders of this company have been making pairs of shoes with organic cotton while providing work for families in South America.

At the beginning of 2016, the French state put in place regulations in favour of biodiversity. “The share of the territory covered by regulatory terrestrial protected areas (national park cores, nature reserves, etc.) is 1.4% in metropolitan areas and 28.7% in overseas departments and communities” (1). This increase is simply proof that the world is changing for a more responsible future.

Commitments to biodiversity are on the rise

The bee, an ally for biodiversity

Among the actions taken by large companies to turn things around; Truffaut takes the gamble of protecting the bees.

It is a revisited gardening mission that offers the brand specializing in the garden, animals and home. Indeed, as part of its long-term commitments, Truffaut is launching its “Yes to Bees” operation.

Thanks to this action, customers can now find a selection of honey plants, books on the theme, as well as flower seeds in all stores of the franchise.

Instead of leaving it to beekeepers to raise bees alone, Truffaut proposes to participate in pollination. The latter is of the most important. Indeed, the majority of crops that produce human food depend on pollination.

Truffaut then encourages each client to feel concerned, and above all to act on his scale. Commitments, whatever their order, begin with education. This time, it involves raising awareness.

Among these apprenticeships, the brand also proposes to embark on permaculture. The latter is a sustainable model that aims to recreate ecosystems. This is another way of gardening that relieves nature.

New Aquitaine, full of resources

France is mobilizing to protect its biodiversity. One of its regions, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, then takes an example from the actions carried out by the national territory, to offer responsible and sustainable resources, in turn. For her, this is transmitted from an early age.

Indeed, the member associations of Poitou-Charentes Nature have developed the educational program “What is going on in Poitou-Charentes?” (2). It is a real training of respect and protection of the fauna and flora, at the level of the youngest.

The children were supervised by naturalist facilitators who eddable them to spot signs of animal presence and to recognize concepts related to BST (maritime and terrestrial biodiversity) such as the ecological corridor for example.

This project in the New Aquitaine region decided to take the side of knowledge and its transmission. This makes it difficult to act in ignorance. It is in this spirit that the awareness of the youngest was born.

From the planet, his earth has been extracted. Men soon realized that it was one of their main resources. Able to feed them in the first place, it is also a source of a large majority of the world economy. A true cultural and economic treasure, the earth suffers. Biodiversity deserves to be listened to. This is a new challenge and the main issue today; to produce responsibly. The sustainable business is gradually being built, and should continue to do so.
