Handicap: a commitment that contributes to the influence of Bordeaux

Last updated:

Disability, a major subject in Bordeaux and an issue in society. On May 20, Bordeaux Business attended a press conference at 5 rue Robert Lateulade. This is the second edition of Adaptathon Bordeaux. The Adaptathon Bordeaux, is an event that allows to develop innovative solutions. These solutions result in ambitious projects that aim to allow better inclusion and also the maintenance of jobs for people with disabilities. In the long term, projects must be sustainably integrated into society. In this sense, it is possible to submit an idea and apply on the event site to participate in the major project of Adaptathon 2021.

Adaptathon returns in 2019 to discuss the issues related to this subject within the Bordeaux metropolis. Already driven for 3 years in other metropolises such as Toulouse Métropole, the Bordeaux territory is committed in turn to move the lines of disability. Beyond the recruitment of people with disabilities, it is the question of their integration that arises then.

Indeed, Adaptathon Bordeaux 2019 aims to change mentalities. The event’s mission is to move the lines vis-à-vis disability in the professional world. Therefore, the objective is to bring out technological and entrepreneurial innovations. Companies must adapt to people with disabilities. For two days, various calls for projects take the form of a creative marathon at Kedge Business School, located in Talence.

Adaptathon Bordeaux is supported by the support of the publisher Dorine Bourneton. He is the world’s first quadriplegic high-flying pilot. Thus, the second edition of Adaptathon will make it possible to house professionals from all walks of life. Business leaders, associations of the 1901 law type, employees, the self-employed will be able to meet for the occasion. During the press conference, we were able to meet Joël Solari. Quadriplegic since 1988 following a serious accident, he is the Deputy Mayor in charge of Disability. He is also co-founder of the Tourism and Disability association and the Adaptathon team.

Disability, all concerned

Adaptathon Bordeaux 2019 will be held on 13 and 14 June. The event is thus divided into two parts. First, the Hackathon, held over 24 hours, is intended to bring out innovative and concrete entrepreneurial projects. If the Hackathon is not a new concept, its use is to capitalize on collective intelligence. It must highlight collective creativity, the diversity of contributions and skills.

Indeed, Franck Pruvost, host of this second edition, entrepreneur and visually impaired since birth takes stock of this approach technique. He notes that allowing meetings is the main vector of employment for people with disabilities. According to him, the exchange is the most optimal response to move the lines of the representations. This requires a new type of management: diversity management. Adaptathon’s advantage is to go beyond the two days of the marathon, embodying a real support structure. The objective is to ensure a follow-up of the various projects, in order to ensure the seriousness and goodwill of the award-winning projects.

June 13 is held in parallel Adaptagames. It is a sports competition to better understand the daily obstacles of people with disabilities in the professional world. On the program of this event, team matches (badminton, basketball), blindfolded obstacle course, board games, and the audio reading of a comic strip of the adventures of Tintin. The goal with these games is to put able-bodied people in a practical handicap situation. A giant aperitif is organized on June 13 in the late afternoon, to polarize the different ideas raised during the day. Indeed, if these two events are very different, they are no less complementary.

The Bordeaux economy: focus on professional and social inclusion

Since 2011, the city of Bordeaux has carried the “city and disability” label. This label is established in partnership with the associations of the Bordeaux region. With the holding of events such as Adaptathon, Bordeaux once again proves its pioneering role in terms of collective intelligence. Indeed, the influence of initiatives such as Adaptathon is very important. Their objectives are to enable the city to compete for the “Destination for all” label.

In addition, Bordeaux was the only winner until 2017 for mental and physical disability. In 2019, Bordeaux will travel to Paris to receive the “Destination for All” brand. This time for four types of disability. The echo received by the first edition is not the least: among the award-winning winners are “Teach-shirt”, spotted by Microsoft. It is on this same logic that Adaptathon was born. The event is led by its president Joël Solari and his team, in order to show that 80% of the disability is not seen

The proactive approach of the Bordeaux economy can easily be illustrated by its actions. Indeed, it takes part in it through the renewed partnership of the Mériadeck business club at the Adaptathon event. As explained to us by its president Eric Bartin, the business club is a local association. It brings together about sixty organizations that participate in their majority in Adaptathon either in the form of a financial partnership for organizations recognized as being of public utility (donations or financing of prizes) or in the form of a grey matter partnership.

The slogan “Together everything becomes possible” then takes on its full meaning. The identity of the logo also responds to this momentum. Indeed, the letter H represents both the Chaban Delmas Bridge, symbol of Bordeaux and modernity, and disability. Unlike the logo of the Toulouse edition, Adaptathon Bordeaux wants to highlight all the handicaps. It is not only aimed at motor disability. The logo functions as a synergy in a circle, image of a rising sun, bringing hope.

“The work of the Adaptathon does not stop at the Adaptathon” assured Franck Pruvost, during the press conference. The interest of this new edition is to raise awareness among the various players in the professional world about disability, while contributing to employment. The goal is to go beyond the horizon of the law. The latter currently requires companies to recruit 6% of people with disabilities. While the organization of the Hackathon began in January 2019, it is reminiscent of the success of the Hackathon Gala with 250 participants.

The event took place on April 8 in Bordeaux. The latter made it possible to raise funds for the organization of this second edition. The Hackathon awards will be presented on December 12, 2019. This deadline will allow the jury to take the time to reflect and follow the various projects, especially regarding their evolution. On the same theme, an evening opening of fields will be held in La Rochelle on May 23, in order to undermine prejudices about disability through humour and the performing arts.
