Edge Computing, the technological momentum for tomorrow’s industry

Edge Computing: This name may not tell you anything. However, the term is growing in the environment on a daily basis. A strong symbol of technological progress,Edge Computing allows instant data analysis with decentralized processing power. In a world where connected objects are part of our daily lives, this quest for speed is essential. Especially in the pure digital sphere, and especially in the professional world…

A quest for instantaneousness with Edge Computing

Edge Computing is part of a world where technology is ubiquitous. The Internet of Things (IoT) follows each of us on a daily basis. Connected watch, able to track all our activity, smartphone, today able to transform into a means of payment … These are all innovations that disrupt everyday life, and create new needs.

The announcement of the rollout of Edge Computing, especially among professionals, appears to be good news. It stands out against Cloud Computing,a technology already well-established in habits. Where Cloud Computing sends all data to a cloud space or data center… Edge Computing processes data on the periphery of the network directly where it is generated.

This not only compensates for the low connectivity of some connected objects, but also provides stability and speed of data analysis. Thus, the data stays close to its source and does not cross the network… As is the case with Cloud Computing.

This responds to a request from professionals, in order to have data quickly, for example in the industrial sector. For production plants, for example, Edge Computing prevents a machine from failing so that it can react more quickly. This is a step forward that fits perfectly into theFuture Factory programme initiated by the New Aquitaine region.

The Factory of the Future seeks to address 5 main issues. Economic, technological, organizational, environmental and societal issues. An in-depth action, therefore, which includes new consumption patterns, new technologies… While meeting the needs of tomorrow, to be part of a long-term progress.

Technology that is part of the age of time

Edge Computing thus responds to new needs, expressed not only by consumers, but also by professionals. Within physical brands, as in mass distribution, for example, Edge Computing appears as an effective solution to manage its operation. The best example is, for example, the management of product stocks in a brand, which warns managers in real time when a reference is missing.

Edge Computing is also useful for other types of services such as finance or production. It offers a sharp reduction in the latency of information processing. This allows an almost instantaneous interaction with the data, for a greater reactivity. Faced with the increase in data generated by connected objects and mobile devices, it will take off with the deployment of 5G on mobile networks in particular. Thus, 5G acts as a catalyst for technology.

Edge Computing also acts on virtual reality, which is used in industry in particular.

The decade that begins is also and above all the symbol of innovations,in many sectors such as industry. The arrival of Edge Computing is also the symbol of industry 4.0. This technology would therefore have a significant weight in the development of machine learning or virtual reality solutions… That develop in terms of characteristics. This requires the support of Edge Computing infrastructure to enable them to evolve sustainably.

Autonomous cars, robotics. Edge Computing, a vector of evolution

In the same vein, it would have an essential role to play in real-time applications. Once considered futuristic, autonomous cars are now a reality. As of January 1, 2021, a UN regulation has allowed manufacturers to market vehicles with the first Level 3 autonomous driving features.

To operate, the vehicle is equipped with sensors and technology that interacts in real time with its environment. It takes into account in real time the data around, such as the presence of other vehicles, and many other factors, and adapts its operation in real time … It’s like a human being is driving. This is only possible with Edge Computing.

The same goes for robotics or artificial intelligence; No latency is tolerated, especially in advanced sectors such as aeronautics, medicine or even automotive. It takes a millimetered precision so that the actions are as accurate as possible.

In the coming years, the Edge infrastructure is expected to become the the main driver of growth in the server and data storage market. And even if it appears that Edge Computing is the solution of the future for industry and innovation… We must not forget the databases of data security. For example, a business leader who uses this technology must take precautions to avoid intrusion into his system. Encrypting all data, using a VPN or controlling access are essential reflexes… Because like all technology, nothing is 100% infallible!
