Food Factory, feeding the great metropolises of tomorrow

The “Food Factory” project tends to position itself as an ambitious project that reveals the gastronomic potential of the Metropolis. It will be on the right bank of Bordeaux, in Cenon, and will settle in the former Distillery of the Old Cure, a former Bordeaux institution. The completion of this important project is planned for 2022, with the start of rehabilitation work by the first half of 2021. The Distillery covers an area of 5,200 m2, which will be completely redesigned and arranged to accommodate Food Factory. A way to demonstrate once again that Bordeaux and its metropolis are capitals of gastronomy.

Food Factory’s momentum for food and its trades

The Food Factory project has been in the forefront for some years. It wants to offer a space entirely dedicated to catering, and to build a real ecosystem around the food transition. For a long time, the issue of local consumption, known as short-circuit, and seasonal products has been raised. This is one of the elements at the heart of the Food Factory’s production. Thus, carried by the master builders AQPRIM and MixCité, the project promises to be innovative in the Bordeaux landscape. It also has the support of financiers such as Koregraf, PG Finance, the Lurton Family and Kairos. Food Factory also wants to develop start-ups in the food trades and vocational training in this sector. It will also offer a large coworking space of more than 2,600 m2 for food professionals.

In total, the Food Factory ecosystem will welcome between 350 and 500 people, and is positioned as an important place for Bordeaux gastronomy. In addition, it will offer a cultural space, which hosts concerts, exhibitions… As well as a gin distillery and shop. These are elements that make the difference and enrich the offer offered by the Food Factory. In Bordeaux, companies in the food and restaurant sector account for an important part of economic activity. Restaurants, cafes, and spaces like the Boca Hall are developing new markets. Markets where local producers are at the heart of an environment where eating well is a priority. Thus, if the rehabilitation work of Food Factory is estimated at 13 million euros, the owners will retain the façade of the distillery as well as its structure.

Restoration, a profession that has been plagued by COVID-19

With COVID-19, catering has been a sector of activity that has been experiencing difficulties since the beginning of 2020. As a result of the containment, the restaurants had no choice but to close. This was a very difficult period, despite the aid and financial support provided by the State and the New Aquitaine region. Thus, with projects like Food Factory, catering entrepreneurs can count on a structure designed for them. It is a real accelerator, starting from the incubator. These are all problems that respond to the same problem, namely how to feed the major metropolises of tomorrow. Many establishments offer deliberately uncluttered menus, with dishes made up of local products. Also seasonal products, which contribute to the local economy. Food Factory could go a long way in supporting and driving tomorrow’s startups.

Thus, food and food projects are numerous and offer important opportunities for local players. These are all large-scale projects that make the city shine and contribute to its international reputation. Food Factory is part of this dynamic and promises, from 2022, to be an important hub of the Right Bank of Bordeaux. For restaurant professionals, this is a project that highlights their art, and the excellence of Bordeaux gastronomy.
