The European Space Agency (ESA) supports European start-ups in their aerospace innovations. Several New Aquitaine projects have benefited from this assistance.
The ESA BIC Sud France programme
TheEuropean Space Agency (ESA) has decentralised research and innovation centres in Europe, the BiCs (Business Innovation Center), which aim to support the creation of companies by transferring technologies inherent in the space sector. THE ESA BIC Sud France brings together several neo-Aquitaine incubators as well as PACA and midi-Pyrénées. These BICs have enabled the creation of 75 new start-ups related to the space sector since 2013. The start-ups were able to receive support from the ESA institutions but also funding in the order of 50,000 euros.
The ESA BIC Sud France exhibition aims to introduce the European Space Agency’s projects but also to allow candidates to become familiar with the application process for funding. The Bordeaux Technowest business incubator is one of the incubators that is part of the BIC Sud France, it is directly linked with companies working in the aerospace field such as Dassault, EADS or Thales.
A welcome boost for neo-Aquitaine initiatives
Several neo-Aquitaine start-ups benefit from the support of ESA BIC Sud France, as does I-sea, which offers innovative coastal observation and management solutions. Recently, the company was awarded for its data analysis solution related to satellite images.
Another example is Reflet du Monde, which develops drones for both civilian and private. One of his creations is a drone with improved satellite communication. This new feature allows drones to be used for missions related to monitoring energy and passenger transport networks, as well as environmental monitoring such as nature parks or coastlines.
On March 15, during the Space Business Innovation Day organized by ESA BIC Sud France, the start-up Mobalib, whose founder was recently interviewed by Bordeaux Business, presented its application project and website making life easier for people with disabilities. The start-up proposes to show its users the places accessible to the disabled as well as the best addresses according to their disabilities.
Aerospace a major asset in New Aquitaine
Aerospace is a major economic asset of the Region, with 4 billion euros in annual sales and 39,500 employees in New Aquitaine. The Region is a world leader in several fields such as the construction of gas turbines, landing gears and the construction of high-end aircraft and batteries.
These assets allow the Region to occupy a major place on the international aerospace scene. The mastery of aeronautical technologies is based on the development and production of various aircraft, from aircraft to drones to satellites. More than 117 companies, not including subcontractors, work closely with this sector in New Aquitaine.
A market that wants to be very competitive… However, the demand for perfection of neo-Aquitaine companies allows them to better stand out from emerging countries. ESA BIC has thus built a networking strategy with innovative companies, in order to better access new technologies.
