LexisNexis, the digital transformation of notariat

LexisNexis, the reference for legal information in France, continues to innovate to enable notariat, like other legal professions, to develop their competitiveness. And for good reason, while in five years the number of notaries has jumped by 50% in France and the number of offices by more than 36% thanks to the law for growth, activity and equal economic opportunities, the economic benefits among notaries remain disparate (1). Indeed, the population of professionals such as lawyers, lawyers or accountants is not homogeneous in the adoption of digital. Some have been willing to integrate these tools for several years when others have no digital presence at all and operate only by word of mouth, recommendations. In this context, the coronavirus crisis has served as a tell-tale or even an amplifier of the gaps. The last few months have therefore been the place of an acceleration of a welcome awareness.

LexisNexis, digital technology for the legal and digital professions

With the doubling of the number of notaries in France, the notarial market is being redesigned. To distinguish itself, the profession is now more interested in developing a more pronounced customer approach. As much as following a strict quality approach (1). Beyond the quality of services, the success of legal and number professionals also depends on their ability to make themselves known and to innovate in their working methods. The Covid-19 crisis has exacerbated the need for digital tools to continue working. Thus, it is quite a problem of visibility that professionals face. Websites and digital strategy are gradually beginning to make their way into the world of law. In addition, blockchain, digital safe, datarooms, remote signature are among the funds technologies concerned by this revolution.

The digital transformation of notariat and legal professions is all the more necessary as other players make their way into the market. Dematerialization, customer confidence, responsiveness… The consumption of the law is changing and the solutions are adapting. In this context, LegalTech is gradually eating away at market share.

For more than a century LexisNexis has stood alongside notaries, lawyers and accountants. A leading player in legal innovation, he has a Lexis Intelligence (1) research and development program. Which is intended to develop technological solutions for the rights and figures trades. Artificial intelligence and predictive justice, digital alongside lawyers, accountants and notaries

In this context, artificial intelligence (AI) is at the heart of the concerns. The scopes of AI are vast, but all allow for practical use. Predictive justice, contract optimization, information monitoring… The tools come in support of professionals to enable them to do their job in the best conditions.

However, the arrival ofAI in the legal field is also a source of concern for many professionals. In addition to an apprehension about the replacement of humans by the machine for certain tasks, these innovations require professionals to analyze their own work, their own business, assess risks, identify complex tasks with high added value on which to position themselves. As with most industries, digital technology redistributes maps and pushes business models to evolve. The professions of law and numbers are therefore no exception.

In addition, it is clear that law, like medicine for example, occupies a special place in our society. These areas deeply affect everyone and influence behaviour and daily life. Also the players of innovation, such as LexisNexis or La Fabrique Juridique in Bordeaux, are required to be more vigilant on ethical issues, the processing of algorithms and data. Avoid biases, cross-reference sources, treat information with maximum impartiality… These are all crucial issues that the solutions developed take care to take into account, in order to best serve the users.

The aim of artificial intelligence (AI) is therefore not to replace the lawyer, but to give him the tools to inform decisions, give options, better document, identify problems. These tools also make it possible to better expose the customer to the situation. In reality, AI is the main way to create what might be called an “enhanced lawyer.”
