Planet travel, SNCF’s enhanced commitments

Planet Voyages, a SNCF approach to give meaning to travel. Indeed, society has been more than upset by the health crisis of COVID-19. The virus has called into question the limits of society and also the environmental problem. On a daily basis, everyone’s actions are reinvented. Mobility is not exempt. For SNCF, it’s time to rethink travel with a bias for the environment. With the Planet Voyagesproject, the latter further marks its commitment to this subject. A meaningful ambition to make a difference and to consider the mobility of tomorrow. In accordance with the collective environmental conscience, SNCF implements its actions step by step.

A respectful mode of transport

Globally, 14% of greenhouse gas emissions are being released by transport. In the territory, this sector accounts for 1/3 of energy consumption. It is in front of the consumption of buildings such as heating or air conditioning. The transport sector is represented by transport and road freight, aviation, navigation, and rail. Among these modes of transport, rail is the least greenhouse gas-emitting means of transportation. It emits only 1.2% co2 emissions.

As it were, it is the most environmentally friendly means of transport. For example, rail travel is 50 times less CO2 than car travel. In order to control global warming, each individual would have to reduce their carbon footprint. For this, taking the train is an action to be preferred. THE SNCF is committed to informing travellers in this regard with the Planet Voyagesapproach. Indeed, in June 2020 according to an IFOP study 66% of French people say they do not take into account the environmental impact to choose their mode of transport.

Through this observation, the SNCF wants to gradually divert passengers from more polluting transport such as cars or planes. Indeed, it aims to attract more than 15 million passengers per year by 2025 as part of Planet Voyages. Before the health crisis had an impact on society and travel, no less than 140 million passengers a year boarded a Ouigo, an INOUI TGV or an Intercité.

This represents an increase of 11%, or 15 million new travellers. These would come from cars and air transport. In addition, they represent 640 kilogram tons of CO2 avoided. However, the Planet Journey program doesn’t stop at just the incentive to take a more respectful transport. Indeed, through the latter, SNCF is committed to reducing its energy consumption by 20%. In addition, it takes part in various actions involving each traveller. Thus, the program is intended to be unifying. Thus, it has two main axes, let it know and do more.

SNCF continues its commitments with the Planet Voyages approach

A mobility player who is committed to the planet with Planet Voyages

Thus, Planet Voyage is an approach that is in line with theSNCF strategy. Indeed, SNCF prides itself on a societal and environmental strategy driven by an ambitious business project, “All SNCF”. Faced with the undeniable realization of the climate emergency, the group’s mission is to be an exemplary actor and also to be a vector of change within society. Thus, the company takes part in the various agreements in favor of the planet. These include the Paris Agreement, the UN Sustainable Development Goals and France’s National Low Carbon Strategy. Building on the principles of these agreements, the group seizes the opportunities to implement a CSR strategy that is a real lever for performance, competitiveness and attractiveness. Thus, each new activity is thought to be part of an ambitious environmental approach.

More concretely, SNCF is putting into practice its willingness to engage in an environmental approach through the various actions Planet Voyages. In particular, it sets up eco-driving and trains its drivers. Accompanied by a driving optimization tool, the objective is to let the terrain of the line carry the train. In addition, the group engages in a circular economy system. He works in the eco-design of trains in recyclables, in enhanced maintenance at mid-life, in the recycling of trains at the end of life or in a zero waste process.

In 2021, the group aims to reduce the waste of bar cars while optimising the management of the remaining waste. To do this, it aims to remove plastic packaging. It wants to offer discounts for travellers coming with their own container. Finally, SNCF wishes to accompany its customers on board in their sorting gesture thanks to a new signage and a cleanliness host.

If SNCF’s environmental ambitions are noble, it will have to convince its passengers. Initially, COVID-19 greatly discouraged travellers from travelling on public transit. On the other hand, they must be accompanied to understand the meaning of their actions. Skipper, competitor, engineer, entrepreneur, François Gabart takes part in the project in order to raise awareness of each individual in the Planet Voyagesapproach.
