Takeaway is now anchored in habits, both for restaurateurs and for customers. It is a solution to satisfy both restaurant supply and household demand. This habit of consumption is now an integral part of the daily life of the French, yet not favoured at the beginning of the crisis. Indeed, the restaurateurs were somewhat reluctant and were waiting for the restaurants to reopen. However, the lengthening of the closing time has forced them to take risks by adopting the takeaway.

Moreover, the craze of takeaway sales will not stop at the reopening of restaurants because is considerably rooted in consumption habits. The health crisis has thus changed consumers’ eating habits over the long term. The use of delivery or click and collect is thus an ease and comfort for customers.

The closure of the restaurants has prompted restaurateurs to rethink the way they operate in order to continue to operate. For example, the consulting and communication agency Api and You carried out an analysis carried out on the results of establishments equipped with the Console Shop and Go. This e-commerce solution allows establishments to be equipped to sell in click and collect, delivery or drive. Thishelps restaurateurs to revive a dynamism in their sales despite the health restrictions. The study was carried out among more than 160 establishments throughout France. Indeed, between 15 April and 31 December 2020, the 165 establishments of the study achieved a total turnover of 5,095,601 euros.

Promising results for the continuity of activity in the restaurant sector in the coming months, even if the restaurants are not yet reopening. The takeaway allows to find a balance and to fill the shortfall due to the still wobbly health situation.

Investing in take-out sales via digital is therefore becoming a priority for establishments. Meeting new consumer demand is essential to survival. Customers are also delighted to be able to support and enjoy the dishes of their favorite restaurants during this period. In addition, take-away sales are not just short-term transactions. Indeed, consumption patterns have really changed for consumers. Thus, takeaway sales have become considerably established in the habits, despite the reopening of restaurants in the summer of 2020. For restaurants, take-out is a boon to grow and grow its turnover.

Changing consumption patterns, the impacts of the health crisis

The health crisis in Covid-19 has significantly changed standard consumption patterns. Indeed, take-out selling has taken an important part of household eating habits. In addition to allowing restaurateurs to continue to practice their profession despite the forced closure of their establishments, it has also helped to restore balm to the hearts of the french confined. For example, according to the study carried out by Api and You, the average basket per order has increased considerably, to around 115 euros for 1 Michelin-starred restaurants. The French are more happy by enjoying gourmet and bistronomic dishes at home.

There is also a craze at the end-of-year celebrations, but not exclusively! Indeed, this new trend of takeaway is all year round, and responds to all occasions: birthdays, Valentine’s Day and other holidays.

Nevertheless, this enthusiasm for takeaway sales also affects the retail sector. The French use delivery more or drive when shopping. Online food trade has increased by almost 80% since the beginning of the health crisis.

The French had to adapt during the confinements, where travel was greatly reduced. They then had to find alternatives to have fun while combining ease and comfort.
